Norman Thelwell, who died in early 2004, is best known for his cartoons of fat hairy ponies and other sporting subjects which have been published all over the world. The Thelwell Pony is a part of the English language. He contributed 1,500 cartoons to the magazine Punch alone. He painted his landscape watercolours principally for his own pleasure, and few have previously been published, other than as illustrations in some of the 32 books that he wrote on a wide range of mainly country pursuits. A major exhibition of his work, organised jointly by Southampton City Art Gallery and The Cartoon Trust, has recently toured the country.
