Norman Thelwell, who died in early 2004, is best known for his cartoons of fat hairy ponies and other sporting subjects which have been published all over the world.   The Thelwell Pony is a part of the English language.   He contributed 1,500 cartoons to the magazine Punch and illustrated a number of the magazine's covers.   A major exhibition of his work, organised jointly by Southampton City Art Gallery and The Cartoon Trust, toured the country in 2003 and 2004.
